I haven't watched a full NFL game in years, perhaps decades, but from time to time look at CBSSports.com to see headlines. Since I don't really keep up that closely I may be wrong but, it seems like a lot of teams are releasing good quality players and players with long history with franchises just to unload contracts. I imagine this isn't completely new, but I sure don't remember the great players of my youth bouncing around several teams over their careers. Has this increased this year because of COVID or am I just out of the loop?

Salary cap. Once a player gets a big contract his days are numbered with the team...
Rookie QB contract is 4 years 700K a year... that's how Super Bowls are won now... within the QB's 1st 4 years... because the team uses the money the QB isn't getting to surround the QB with weapons. It's how the Chiefs won with Mahomes.. now that they've paid him 500M/44M per year they don't have the salary cap flexibility to keep marquee players... so they have to trade them...
It's also how the Brady won all those rings... he constantly restructured his contracts to give the team the ability to pick up talent....

While not quite Mahomes new numbers, Joe Burrows rookie contract he just signed with the Bengals was 4 years $36.2 Million, with $23.88 Million of that paid up front in signing bonus, and $12.4 Million over 4 years. Mahomes rookie contract was a guaranteed four-year, $16.42 million contract that included a signing bonus of $10.08 million.
