Same. Chorus is slight. I usually like anything Schon/Cain writes. Not sure if this is going to check the boxes for those wanting something more in line with their signature sound. Cool that the band is taking a swing with something a little heavier.

I like it. No "Higher Place." The production is also surprisingly simple imo. Neal's blues guitar, drums, and Cain has a thick fat slab of wah-wah synth.

Meh. It's OK, but if this is the best track of new music I will be disappointed. Neal's setting of expectations over the past year about how awesome this would be is perhaps what leaves me somewhat disappointed. I wouldn't skip it in the rotation of Journey songs if it were on a CD or a someone else's playlist, but it might not make it into the my playlist to begin with. We will see what comes next.

Neal pumps everything up like it's the 2nd coming.. can't really blame him though... would be silly for him to say something like... "well, it's OK.. not great.. but pretty OK..."

Apparently the video for their 1st single of their new album dropped on the 24th.... Musically it's OK... but there's nothing really that sticks out about it... There's no classic Journey hook, nothing that catches my ear. If this is the best of the stuff they've been working on..... Production wise... There's no pop - it just sounds "flat" - there's no dynamics at all - I'd bet it's over compressed... ... And there is something about Arnels vocal that is missing in the mix (this is before the compression to the stereo 2 track)... the upper frequencies of Arnel's are missing... and that is the range that we use to discern what is being said... and it's like they're missing or buried in the mix.
I wonder where this was mixed and by who...
Compare this to the 1st song on Eclipse:
... these vocals are clear, up front... and the mix is also clear.. most likely because it was mixed at Addiction Sound by David Kalmusky..
My take... Someone fucked up this mix.

Neal said this was not even supposed to be a song. He was fucking around on the guitar and some synth loop and decided to send it to Cain and it came back with lyrics. I'm 100 confident this was just to throw a bone out there and nowhere near indicative of the rest of the album. I hope I'm right.

I wasn't even commenting on the song specifically.. because it feels unfinished..
Everything reflects on the brand Journey (hell Neal just went to court over it!)... and they had wars with Perry over it... so the fact is they know better than this.... this isn't some up&coming band just trying to get ears on their music... people are gonna assume everything they release is a "final product"... their best work, not some unfinished half ass mixed demo.. because that's what this is... an unfinished song demo.. with bedroom audio quality... which can be good, assuming the room has been tuned... but this audio is horrid....
Neal's new management should be lighting him up for putting this out (if he did)... and if the management did this... Neal should be lighting them up, and looking for new management..

And the saga of a band that could be on top of the world but can't stop tripping over themselves continues. Arnel is what keeps me interested at this point. Some of his non-journey YouTube stuff is more appealing to me than this.

Sending guitar stuff to Cain is basically how they've always collaborated.

Hey, I can't blame you on your sentiment. I think we've all felt this band had it in them to do better, only to be let down. I try and be optimistic and hopeful every time something new is coming out. You're right though, this talent should know better than to release some of this unpolished stuff. Like that damn kid who keeps kicking the ball off the side of his foot and can never make the field goal!

Last we heard, the mixing was being done by Bob Clearmountain. Cain at one point did say that Kalmusky would be involved. Not sure if that still stands. The mix is odd - I partly wonder if it's because everybody recorded their parts separately. However, alot of bands work like that and they sound pristine/clear/crisp. My biggest issue is, I hear Arnel, Neal, and then just a fat deafening wall of Cain synth. Listening to Higher Place, I hear alot of individual instrumentation. This is just a heavy wall of noise.

I think Neal and QPrime are on the same page about it. I def. expected more after a decade of no new music plus Narara/Randy.
