Schon was interviewed on Sirius/XM today (10/13). Journey highlights below -
“We have great new music coming.”
“Given the pandemic we have not all been in the same studio. The recording is going amazing. There are 13 new tracks in the can.”
“Arnel is now singing on them.”
“I’m excited about this record.”
“New music will be released early next year.”
Journey’s new management is Qprime (Metallica, Disturbed).
“They (Qprime) get it. Last time we spoke we were going to release a single earlier in November; they want to push it back.”
“End of 2021 Journey will be back on tour.”
“The band is on fire.”
On the at-home recording process…
“It’s either Jon working in his studio sending tracks to me and Narada to overdub or Narada and I together playing live in his studio, and then we send them over to Randy.”
“It’s coming together, for being a virtual record.”
“We have like 13 songs. They are not all finished yet. I bet you at least 7 or 8 will remain after we decide what we are going to keep.”
“I am pushing for a diverse record like Escape. I want to dip back into some heavier R&B-like rock like Separate Ways.”
In terms of who is producing the record “we are all doing our parts.”
“Narada is producing Arnel’s vocals. The rest of the band is producing the rest as a team 50/50.”
“You change one guy, and it’s a different band. You change two guys – the rhythm section - and it’s a different beast.”
On the Ross countersuit…
“I can’t really talk about the legal stuff…we have put a more than generous deal on the table for Ross and Smith to accept. If they do not take it, we go to court. I am willing to take it to the max. I’ve worked my whole life for this band.”
“Rather than them trying to take over, Ross/Smitty could have called us up. Me and Jonathan did not appreciate it. “
“New management loves guitar. We send them mixes. Manager, Cliff Burnstein, always wants the heavier mix. “

Sooo translation: translation: Jon wanted a more classic-Journey song structure... new management agrees....
translation: Qprime wouldn't pay for a producer, we didn't want Shirley (or he opted out), and we aren't paying for one, except for Arnel, who is paying Narada to mix his vocals.... the rest of the band is engineering/recording their own stuff...
translation: We're now ROR version 2.0 translation: I thought I could bully my way into using the Journey mark. I then fucked up firing them when they both had performance contracts for Journey, ownership rights to the Journey mark, and voting rights as shareholders of Nightmare, where the Journey mark is managed. Now I have to pay them to square their Journey contracts and relinquish their rights as Nightmare officers.
I fucked up.

Confused by new management loves guitar. Eclipse was almost nothing but guitar. It wasn't anything like Escape or Separate Ways in my recollection. I don't know how you get a band sound with everyone mixing and engineering their own stuff. Way too many drivers with hands on the wheel. I can't see Arnel agreeing to pay anyone to mix his vocals. You want the Journey voice, Journey pays for it. Also not sure how Neal gets 5 guys each doing something and comes up with 50/50. I can't believe that Neal's attorneys let him walk into the mess to begin with. Keeping him out of this kind of shit is what attorneys are paid to do. I don't know why they left Azoff, but wouldn't be surprised if he told Neal that he was a dumbass with the lawsuit and Neal threw a tantrum and walked. From what I have read about Azoff, Neal and Jon did not get out cheap either unless their contract was up.

Arnel doesn't need Journey anymore... by Philippine standards he's insanely wealthy...
I think Arnel was given a choice... pay Narada or we get someone else to sing...
Neal prolly got warned by his attorneys about using the Journey mark with out permission... and he likely told them not to worry about it... remember he believes Journey is his band.. so the name is his too.. legal standing be damned....
Knowing Neal, he would have said if they'd fired Azoff... so I'm also betting Azoff cut ties because Journey wasn't making any money for him anymore...

If Arnel doesn't need Journey anymore, why would he agree to pay Narada to stay in the band? I think that when they lose Arnel, they are truly done. I don't see Jon wanting to, or even having the years to spend getting fans interested in another new lead singer. Unless it's Perry, they go back to the same place as they were in 98 with Augeri. You're right about Neal's attitude about "his" band. He forgets that it was Perry's voice and writing with Jon that made "his" band. He can love playing Cookie Duster and all of the early stuff all he wants, but it never paid the bills. Journey and Def Leppard made 100 million in ticket revenue in 2018. It's not Paul McCartney kind of money, but few make that. He's got other clients who make a lot less, but then some of them have been with him for decades. Regardless, Journey has had only 2 managers in almost 50 years. Most bands don't live half that long.

I never said Arnel is paying to stay in the band... I said he's likely paying Narada to engineer/mix his vocals. That's it.
When I say Arnel doesn't "need Journey"... its because the wealth he's accumulated makes his standard of living in the Philippines vs. USA is off the charts... At this point the only interest he needs to have in it is financial. The payday. Why? his home and heart is in Manila... not the States. The wealthier he gets the, the easier it gets for him to say... "..... if there's no money in it, why would I want to leave my home and my family for months on end?"
"Jon not wanting to, or even having the years to spend getting fans interested in another new lead singer" means Arnel has real leverage, the kind that lets him negotiate a price that is reasonable for Narada to engineer/mix his vocals... for an album that will likely make them zero money.
Journey doesn't make their money on new albums sales... they haven't for a long time.
They make their money touring. But it isn't 2018 anymore. The likelihood of Journey ever making their 2018 100M ticket revenue is pretty damn small. It's a COVID world right now, and looks to be for the next couple years at least. Even Neal said they aren't touring until "the end of 2021" - That's over a YEAR from now.
That means their only real source of revenue (touring) isn't even possible.
Doing this record is just to get another 15 minutes on Ellen and another mention on MR.

Who is paying Arnel which allows him to negotiate a high price? And with what money if they aren't making any from any new album and touring isn't happening? Why pay someone to mix/engineer vocals for a band you wouldn't be staying in? Why stay in a band that isn't going to make a dime for at least another year, if your motivation is money, which if he lives like a king probably isn't? And if you aren't going to stay in a band to tour more than a year from now, why invest time and money in it at all - especially if it has no payday - unless you are contractually obligated for X years, albums, etc.? I agree with you that the 100M days are most likely gone forever for Journey, regardless of who Neal gets into the band - even with Perry at this point. They will always get another mention on MR, Andrew loves them - to his credit. Ellen, IMO, was all about Arnel's story, new music isn't going to get them anything, though maybe the Randy Jackson back in the band angle will get them an Entertainment Tonight 2 minute segment.

Who is paying Arnel which allows him to negotiate a high price? Arnel is rich... he has his own moneyAnd with what money if they aren't making any from any new album and touring isn't happening? See above...Why pay someone to mix/engineer vocals for a band you wouldn't be staying in? That's the point... sing on the album... minimize your cost to do so. Sing your parts in Manila, send them to Narada over the internet. Lots of people do that now.Why stay in a band that isn't going to make a dime for at least another year, if your motivation is money, which if he lives like a king probably isn't? Because he can, and it keeps his options open. And if you aren't going to stay in a band to tour more than a year from now, why invest time and money in it at all - especially if it has no payday - unless you are contractually obligated for X years, albums, etc.? Agree. Neal needs to keep the name alive, he's got alimony for 4 wives to pay..

Arnel is rich... he has his own money If so, why has Arnel been hawking misc. products over his social media - including air purifiers? To date, he's the only Journey member charging fans for interactions on Cameo. He's acting like a down on his luck D-lister. I think Arnel was given a choice... pay Narada or we get someone else to sing... Narada is known for producing and recording some of the best singers out there - Mickey Thomas, Whitney Houston, Mariah etc. OF COURSE the band was going to have him handle the vocals. Doing this record is just to get another 15 minutes on Ellen and another mention on MR. I don't recall Ellen giving a shit about any of the Augeri-era cds. Neal has been committed to creating new music (Journey, solo, or side project) regardless of publicity.

Prolly for the same reason athletes with multi-million dollar contracts still do endorsements... cashing in on their fame. Just because Arnel is the only one doing it doesn't mean he's not wealthy... maybe it means he just has more notoriety, and/or is more accessible to those he's been hawking misc. products to.

We get it. You hate Neal Schon and new Journey music. For most fans, it's exciting and positive news. Also, Arnel is endorsing no-name gimmicky chachkas - no comparison to multi-million dollar athlete deals at all. What's next? Promoting walk-in bathtubs with Pat Boone on late night cable? In regards to who actually pays the tab for production fees, I don't know. All of the albums since Arrival have been produced independently by Nomota. Cain has complained before that Journey albums cost too much. The idea that only Arnel is on the hook seems implausible to me.

Nah.. don't hate Neal at all. Just understand that he's gotten really good as saying things indirectly. He had to with the years of Perry gag orders he had to deal with.
Arnel's main fan base is Philippine, not American. Gimicky chachkas are what they can afford... not $500 Nikes.
All the other guys in the band have made money at music their whole lives. None of them have had the life experience Arnel has had. Being homeless. Not knowing where your next meal is coming from. Arnel's just doing what someone from the streets does... hustlin'. I can't, nor do I think anyone else would, fault him for that.
It seems equally implausible (actually impossible) to me that Narada, "known for producing and recording some of the best singers out there - Mickey Thomas, Whitney Houston, Mariah etc."all who he got paid for working with... would simply record, engineer, & producer Arnel "for free".... someone is paying Narada for his obvious talent, and reputation.

Narada is also a member of the band. Sometimes drummers wear more than one hat (see Simon Phillips in TOTO). I'm sure he's getting paid - but the idea that Arnel was given an ultimatum or forced to pay for it out of pocket seems odd. I'm just glad somebody is working on the vocals. Look at Disc 2 of Revelation. Shirley didn't work much on that and AP's accent is all over it.
