I have been watching Elvis concerts. Man, that guy could sing. His shows were not only his hits, but so many others' too. I didn't know that he could play the piano, but he did it really well on one song. His bands were awesome, keeping up with whatever change-up he threw at them, especially in some of his over-prescription medication states. Way more than just a singer, he was a true entertainer, without all of the distraction of today's light shows, sampled music, click tracks, etc. He would have been 86 this year.

This guy tours this act and does pretty well. Good tribute! Some of these guys are really, really good. Others just make me laugh. August of 1992, I was driving back to Oklahoma City from Knoxville with a caravan of cars with 25 Boy Scouts and leaders in it. We had been at a convention in Knoxville all week. We were spending the night in Memphis and I just wanted to drive by Graceland to say that I had seen it. One of the other adults says "we don't have anything else to do, it's only 2pm, so let's find somewhere to park and just walk around." We find a parking lot a few blocks away and head toward Graceland. When we get there, there are tons of people there and satellite TV trucks, the whole works. We find out that it is the 15th anniversary of Elvis's death and people from all over the world have come to commemorate it. These Boy Scouts are too young to really get what's going on, see these Elvis impersonators, and think the whole world has gone crazy. The other 5 adults and I try to explain to them what the fuss is all about, but they don't really get it. We all get our picture taken with 3 impersonators - 1 1970's fit looking Elvis in costume, 1 1970's fat Elvis in costume with balding hair, and 1 guy who looked like Barney fife with bad hair Elvis sideburns and glasses, brown cordoroy pants and a light blue shirt - standing in front of the gates of Graceland. We then go on to our motel across the Mississippi into West Memphis and eat dinner. After dinner the Scouts are all out at the pool hanging out. They are only there for about 15 minutes before I notice all of them have gone back to their rooms. This seemed really odd since they were really excited about swimming. The next day, I find out that there was a program on HBO in the hotel rooms called "Real Sex". Apparently a couple of the boys had found it and told all of the others. Fortunately, I didn't ever hear any complaints from parents when we got back. The other leaders (all men) all smiled and understood exactly what had happened. Those boys learned a lot about American culture that day.

This is apparently from his last TV special. He still had chops.

Still on my Elvis kick. He did so many covers in concert and on albums, it got me wondering what melodic rock songs from the late 70s and 80s would have been good for him to cover. DSB? 😬. Jukebox Hero? Riding the Storm Out? Working for the Weekend? Hot for Teacher? 😂
It's all ridiculous, I know, but what do you think?

I can't sleep, so here are some Journey songs that I think E could do a good job with: LTS, Stay Awhile, Walks Like a Lady, Who's Cryin Now, Separate Ways, Suzanne, Ask the Lonely. Same arrangements, just Elvis's voice instead of Perry. Not quite a full album, perhaps there are a few other songs, but Elvis Sings Journey would sell. Probably better than anything else that they have done post Perry.

Good article. So much crap that is sold as "music". I have a friend whose daughter was 13 or so when the local paper - in a city of a million people, so pretty big coverage - wrote a story about how the girl is a "songwriter" who hopes to make it big someday. Great kid, great parents, but seriously a 13yo "songwriter" that is worth a half page article in the city paper? Somebody is being sold a load of it, I am just not sure who. I had read that about Col Parker and Elvis before somewhere. Apparently the Parker was really shady and much of it Elvis was unaware of. Made him millions and continues to do so.

I also remember reading several years ago that one of the falling out issues with Mick Jones and Lou Gramm was over the publishing split for I Want to Know What Love Is. According to Gramm, he put in a lot of work to help Jones flesh it out. Gramm asked for 25% or so, and Jones would only agree to 5%. Gramm finally said screw you, just keep it all then and Jones did. Jones has made fortune off of it.
