I was in a corporate box suite (free food! fuck yeah!) for this show. In comparison to the Philly show the other week, TOTO clearly ruled the night here. Their sound mix was superb. Both Joe and Luke were distinctly audible. The set list adventurously included the debut of "Can't Stop Loving You" and their opener was "Orphan" from XIV. Luke's playing was just uncanny. Not only melodic, but amazingly technically proficient. Journey was fine- but their sound mix was just compressed, slightly-distorted shit. Like a nerd, I polled people in an elevator on my way out regarding who was the better band. They all said TOTO. Security later told me that audience members were leaving Journey early or mid-way complaining they were just too loud - but hey, I think that's how Neal likes it! As for the performance itself....highlight was again Deen singing Mother, Father. Jason doing Suzanne, (which I had previously seen in August), was also great. Both Arnel and Neal were not clear in the mix from my seats so it's hard to asses performance. From a physical standpoint, Arnel was lively - even spanking himself at one point during LTS. This move had others in the private box cringing/laughing. In the lead-up to their one new song "The Way We Used To Be", Neal told the audience "I fucking missed you guys. I mean it!" Todd on bass has great energy and Deeno is the glue keeping it all together in perfect skin-pounding time.

I have watched the latest Toto videos on YouTube with the current lineup and they sound really good. Mix is excellent. Band is playing tight together, which has always been one of the best things about them for me. Even songs that I don't care for, the musicianship is always first rate. Glad to hear that they are sounding good on the road.

Yes, they always seem to deliver. New lineup also seems stable. Can't say the same for Journey (Narada - gone, Marco - gone, Randy - gone).

At this point I'd almost hope they retire so Neal can go do JTT.. I've decided to go see the April show in Sacramento. Being able to see Toto live for the first time was a big driver in coming to my decision. I think Journey sounds like crap from the videos I've been seeing and as much as I like AP, age is catching him and his vocal struggles show it. I don't know how much longer they can go on.

I think that Toto is a band that has settled into who they are and what they want to do. They have hits that they will play, but not always all of them the same night. They dig deep into their catalog and fans don't walk out on it. Perhaps because they play smaller venues than Journey, the fans that go to the Toto shows seem more dedicated. Journey gets bigger crowds, but the fans will walk if they start digging into side 2 of Evolution material. I can't see Jon sticking around for that type of thing. I guess that's where Neal tries to go with Journey Through Time. Way smaller crowds, but more dedicated like the Toto crowd. JTT and Toto would be a great show.
