Rolie, Schon, Valory, Perry and Smith
These guys were killing it. Not a big fan of the wardrobes, but then who was/is? Perry nails the high notes, nothing sampled or over processed, just guys with instruments and voices playing the music. A lot of days I wish we could get back to that.

I saw this tour, People and Places was a standout for me. The YouTube of it has a glitch though.

I saw this tour, People and Places was a standout for me. The YouTube of it has a glitch though. That's one of my favorite songs. I sort of miss the old days when they would play these now called "deep cuts" because they were on the latest album and they didn't have a huge catalog. I like to go back and listen to Evolution from start to finish. It was my first real introduction to Journey and still is my favorite album.

Journey, Look Into The Future, Next, Infinity, Evolution, Departure... those are the albums that represent the Journey I grew up loving. There is an edge to all the music on these records. Even the softer songs like "People and Places" have that simple edge to them.
Evolution was an album I literally wore out... along with Departure, these 2 albums represent the Journey I prefer.
Escape, while I can appreciate it, and it is a great album, was a different album for me... likely due to the inclusion of Cain's writing influence. Journey's sound somehow got softened to me with this album... like all the edge had been taken off... It just didn't feel youthful.. at least enough for my ears/taste. Frontiers and ROR were good albums.. but by this time I'd lost interest in them, as these albums just didn't move me the way the 1st 6 did. When a band is hungry they sound different, they play different. At least to me they do. It's probably why I prefer AC/DC up to Back In Black. IMHO, after this album they lost that intangible thing that they had prior....

For me, Evolution was my first introduction, but also in listening to it compared to all of the previous albums it seems to me - 45 years into it - that they were finally hitting their stride with Perry. Perhaps the addition of Smith replacing Dunbar, Perry really coming into his comfort level (and the other guys with him to the extent they would), and better songs.
The pre-Cain song lyrics were mediocre at best, IMO. Not always bad, but you see that they were often looking for something rhymed and wasn't necessarily thoughtful. Cain really helped with that when he joined.
I agree, though, that the sound softened after Departure. Comparing Stay Awhile with Open Arms, the two "love songs" on their respective albums, shows a huge difference in production and sound approach. Stay Awhile has always been a better song to me than Open Arms, though OA gets the nod for popularity. Faithfully, IMO, is a better song than either of them both productionally and lyrically.
Daydream and Do You Recall are two I really like from Evolution as well. I can't think of anything since that really compares. Not lyrically strong, but still solid.
