This is a huge positive. The potential is there for sure. Jackson and Walden are both top tier musicians and should bring a lot to the table. We could actually have some song writing. Walden has several Grammy noms and has won 3.

JTT is something I was excited about... Journey going back to its rock roots... leaving the Dead Dirty Dozen alone...
This is new lineup is ironically the ROR line up without Perry and Mike Baird (drums).... (too bad Perry can't sing anymore)
The real challenge will be how stick-up-his-ass Cain gets along with the bruthas Jackson and Walden.... especially Walden, who's a well respected writer/producer himself.
I also don't think we'll see another Eclipse style album either... as Jackson and Walden are more R&B players... I also don't expect Arnel to be able to inject any kind of R&B swing or groove (like Perry would) into the output of Cain/Schon/Walden.....
I think I'm officially done with 21st century Journey..

Remember when Andrew called Eclipse was Journeys best album ever? It's a coaster for me. Shows you what he knows about music. It's my understanding that Cain is in the mood to make music.

It's amazing to me that it has been almost a decade since new Journey music has come out. Not a fan at all of Eclipse, and if that's the kind of effort in lyrics and production that we will get, I will probably pass on the new stuff as well. I grew up wearing out my sister's vinyl Evolution and Departure discs. Lyrically, they were pretty weak, but the music was very good. Jon's writing influence was so obvious and very much for the better on Escape through ROR. I felt like TBF had a few moments lyrically, but a lot of filler. Ditto Arrival, Generations and Revelation. It just seems to me that with a few exceptions on each post-ROR disc, any great music is not enough to overcome weak lyrics.

Me too. Evolution and Departure era lineup for me is my favorite.... Rolie and Perry's voice blend was other-worldy. It could have been something amazing had Rolie stuck around.
I actually lost interest in them when Escape came out... thought they'd lost their rawness....

Well, I guess I'm of a dissenting opinion re Eclipse. I love it, but I've been a fan of everything except Red13. In case anyone missed it, there is a new Journey album being produced right now. Supposedly to be released near the end of July. It's gonna be with Narada and Randy. Might bring a different groove, possibly like ROR. We'll see.

Kevin Shirley did Arrival, Revelation and Eclipse. He's posted nothing recently about working with Journey. Kevin Elson did Generations and that did not go well. With Jon and Neal disagreeing for years about new music, I can't imagine that they just crank out something amazing on their own.

The songs might have a ROR feel.... but there's no way Pineda can sing them with anywhere near the same R&B feel/timing of Perry. I'd bet that becomes a sticking point with Cain....
Pineda has always had immense physical gifts... but feel and timing isn't one of them... he's a one-trick pony (volume)... and volume isn't the same as dynamics.

He's picked up the Perry phrasing really well over the years on the old stuff IMO. But he had Perry's work to emulate. I agree, that the original material he has sung is not timed and phrased well. It is apparent that English is not his original language. I'm not knocking the guy, he has an amazing story and does a good job. Perhaps a good and patient producer could get it closer to the Perry feel, but that would seem to take a lot of time (money) and when the band is not even in the same country it would add that much more difficulty. Doing it well and doing it right are not cheap or easy, which seems to be the path these guys have taken for most of at least a decade or more now.

I think both of these replacements are the injection of creative energy the band needs right now. Will they ever tour? Let's hope. A pandemic is a strange time to announce a reconfiguration of a band.
